This page offers insight about the southwest's leading freelance editor, Robyn Conley, and why your manuscript would benefit from an objective diagnosis by this book doctor. Editors don't have time to weed through piles of rough manuscripts, ignoring jagged edges, hoping to discover valuable prose buried beneath muddy prepositional phrases and muddled points of view. Book doctors/freelance editors are assuming this important role in today's publishing industry, enabling writers to rise above the slush.
WHY CHOOSE ROBYN AS YOUR BOOK DOCTOR?
Her lovely bookside manner, of course. Robyn is a writer first, with many books and articles to her credit. She has written and sold several books, including WHAT REALLY MATTERS: JOURNALING TO A SIMPLER LIFE (Writer's Digest Books); the biographies: JOHN GRISHAM: A PUBLISHING PHENOMENON, ALEXANDER G. BELL, and INFLUENTIAL CARTOONISTS (Lucent Books); DEPRESSION (Lucent Books); MEERKATS OF AFRICA (Capstone Press). Robyn's articles have appeared in numerous magazines, including ByLine, Youth Update, and The Church Herald.
Her editing credits are extensive: RUPERT HUGHES: A HOLLYWOOD LEGEND, by Jim Kemm (Pomegranate Press), FORBIDDEN QUESTand DESIGNER PASSION by Dar Tomlinson (Genesis Press), GABRIEL'S HEART by Madeline George (Harlequin Historicals), GAMBLERS AND GANGSTERS, by Ann Arnold (Eakins Press), FADED WINGS/FADED GLORY, by John Dinou (Impact Publishing).
Robyn is frequently asked to attend writer's conferences to speak about how to edit your own work and market it to publishers. She also offers one-on-one critiques for attendees and helps them find ways to improve their writing. Robyn teaches writing-related workshops at Texas Christian University and University of Texas at Arlington, and these outlets help her know the most frequently asked questions about the writing business...and the answers.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM THE BOOK DOCTOR?
When Robyn reads a manuscript (novel, short story, non-fiction book, article, poem, college thesis) she line-edits each page for grammar, sentence structure, redundant phrases, proper format, etc. Rewriting and revision samples are offered directly on the page and she also includes a typed critique regarding content, flow, dialogue, characterization, style, etc...based on a commercially marketable perspective.
Robyn also specializes in query letters, cover letters, and synopses.
COMMENTS FROM CLIENTS
"Based on Robyn's excellent and thorough critiques, I sold my contemporary romance myself and later found literary representation by submitting my mainstream novel." --Dar Tomlinson
"Robyn pointed out my prose habits--words I used too often, phrasing or description too similar--aspects of my writing I was too close to see. Both of the books she critiqued won Grand Prize Fiction Honors at the Southeastern Writers Conference and one was purchased by Harlequin Historicals." --Linda George (aka: Madeline George)
"Heed and succeed! I did, and I did!" --Nancy Robinson Masters, columnist for 20 years, author of several adult and children's books.
"I felt like I got a full-course in creative writing and publishing for less than half the cost at my local college. Thank you, thank you!" --Jim Tomaszek, Chicago, IL.

To get a feel for her editing style and the benefit it would be for their work, many of Robyn's clients have chosen the TRIAL process by sending several pages and a check to cover that many pages at $5.00 per page. She welcomes this option and is also willing to read work stretched out over a few weeks to make it easier on tight budgets. Usual turnaround on complete novels is two weeks, and for a few chapters, short stories and articles less than one week.
